TYPES OF APPLIANCES

Rubber bands are used to align bite and jaw position. Every patient will not have to wear rubber bands, but they are very important in correcting the bite as they gently move the teeth into alignment.

Forsus or forsus springs are used primarily to correct overjet or overbite. They align the teeth, reduce overbite and promote proper jaw growth and alignment.

Separators or Spacers are inserted between the teeth when they are too close together. They are used in the beginning stages to create space for the bands to fit securely around the teeth. Spacers are usually worn for 7-10 days and braces are fitted immediately after they are removed to ensure proper fitting.

To treat more severe cases of overjet or overbite, the Herbst appliance is applied. A great alternative to jaw surgery and headgear, the Herbst appliance is used to modify jaw growth and they're most effective on growing children.

The Palatal Expander is an orthodontic appliance used to expand the palate and widen the upper jaw so the upper and lower teeth better fit together. Though it can be used on adults, it is most effective in young patients as they are still growing.

Tooth positioners are custom-made, removable orthodontic appliances that support final tooth movement without braces. They can close the small spaces at the back teeth and help perfect bite position. Positioners should be worn 4-10 hours per day and can be a good short-term retainer alternative.

Retainers can be fixed or removable and they are applied after braces to help maintain the smile and bite. These custom-made appliances are important to keep teeth in position after the braces have been removed. Retainers are typically worn for up to 12 months after the braces are removed.

The Twin Block Appliance is used to correct the shape, size, and position of the jaw and is ideal for reducing overjet. This jaw correcting orthodontic appliance is made from two custom-fitted blocks on biting surfaces that help reduce overbites and improve the position of upper and lower teeth in children 10-12 years of age.
